Top 10 New Energy Vehicle Sellers in Asia 2021

Asian Tech Press (Apr. 11) -- The cumulative global sales of new energy vehicles (NEVs) reached nearly 6.5 million units in 2021, an increase of 108% year-on-year.

ATP has identified the top 10 brands of new energy vehicles sold in Asia in 2021.

The total sales of these top 10 brands is 2,392,064 units, accounting for 37% of overall global sales, including seven Chinese brands, two Korean brands and one Japanese brand.

The top seven Chinese brands in sales are BYD, SAIC-GM-Wuling (SGMW), SAIC Volkswagen, Great Wall Motor, GAC and Chery, with total sales of 1,958,558 units, accounting for nearly 30% of total global sales in 2021.

Among them, BYD ranked first with 593,878 units sold, up more than 220% year-on-year, with a global market share of 9.1%. SGMW ranked second with 456,123 sales, and SAIC Volkswagen ranked third with 319,735 sales.

Hyundai and Kia from South Korea ranked fifth and sixth with sales of 159,343 and 158,134 units respectively.

It is worth mentioning that Japan's Toyota, which reigned supreme in the era of fossil fuel vehicles, is paying for its strategic missteps in the field of NEVs in the past few years, with sales of only 116,029 units in 2021, almost falling out of the top 10 brands in Asia, ranking ninth.

In addition, Nio Inc., Li Auto and XPeng Inc., the three leading Chinese electric vehicle makers, did not make them into the top 10. Among them, Xpeng ranked eleventh with 98,698 units of annual sales.
