Tencent, Huawei, Epic Games, and others form research institute of metaverse and VR interaction in Shanghai

Asian Tech Press (Aug 25) -- Tencent, Huawei, Epic Games and others have recently formed a joint research institute of metaverse and virtual-real interaction in Shanghai.

The Joint Research Institute of Metaverse and Virtual-Real Interaction, China's first comprehensive technology and industry innovation platform with the focus onf virtual-real interaction and strengthening reality with virtuality, officially opened in Shanghai at the end of August.

This is another important academic research institution in the field of metaverse after the first comprehensive innovation platform of virtual-real interaction in China, the Joint Innovation Center of Metaverse and Virtual-Real Interaction, opened in Shanghai in early June this year.

Fudan University, China Mobile's subsidiary Migu Co Ltd, Tencent's Interactive Entertainment Group (IEG), Huawei Technologies Co., Epic Games and other first-class industry, academia and research institutions initiated the co-construction of the research institution.

And Peking University, Renmin University of China, Zhejiang University, Nanjing University and other relevant institutions of China's leading universities serve as research co-builders.

Zhao Xing, professor of Institute for Big Data at Fudan University and deputy director of Fudan University's National Experimental Base for Intelligent Evaluation and Governance, is the director of the new institute.

Shanghai has valuable experience and power of action in digital transformation and construction, with strong support from talent, technology, industry, urban environment and spending power for metaverse, which constitute the core reasons for the Institute to land in the city, Zhao said.
