Asian Tech Press (Oct 19) -- Cancer vaccine could be available by 2030, say two founders of German biotech firm BioNTech SE.
A vaccine against cancer could be available by 2030, said Ugur Sahin and Ozlem Tureci, the founders and husband-and-wife team behind BioNTech, who have now made a breakthrough, boosting industry optimism for a cancer vaccine.
BioNTech, together with U.S.-based Pfizer Inc., developed and produced the revolutionary mRNA COVID-19 vaccine, which became known as one of the most successful vaccines under the new crown epidemic.
The German scientist couple recently received an interview with the BBC, appearing on the latest episode of Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg.
In the interview, Prof. Tureci described how the mRNA technology at the heart of the COVID-19 vaccine could be repurposed for a cancer vaccine that would activate the human body's immune system to attack cancer cells.
When asked when an mRNA-based cancer vaccine would be available for patients, Dr. Sahin said it could be available by 2030.
