Australia issues proposed compulsory recall for unsafe LG solar batteries

Asia Tech Wire (Feb 5) -- Australia's competition regulator on Monday issued a proposed compulsory recall of unsafe LG solar storage batteries.

Up to 5,000 LG solar batteries in question remain in Australian homes that could overheat and catch fire without warning, according to a statement from the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC).

Stephen Jones, assistant minister for the Australian government, issued the proposed recall notice, accusing LG of failing to take satisfactory action to prevent harm from the affected batteries.

LG Energy Solution Ltd and LG Energy Solution Australia Pty Ltd have obligations to take a range of actions to deal with the unsafe LG batteries, Jones said.

There have been 13 incidents of property damage in Australia involving the unsafe LG solar batteries, including the destruction of a house in Victoria.

ACCC deputy chair Catriona Lowe said, "A proposed recall notice is a formal step towards a compulsory recall."
